What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the part of dentistry that straightens teeth and corrects how the upper and lower jaws meet, using braces, clear aligners and retainers. At Amores Dental, orthodontic care is led by Dr. Albert Lucas Jr., DMD, MS, an orthodontic specialist who sees patients at our Dadeland and Palmetto Bay offices.
An orthodontist is a dentist with two to three more years of specialty training in moving teeth and guiding jaw growth. Having one in the same practice as your family dentist means cleanings, fillings and orthodontic visits happen in one place, with one team and one set of records.

Braces are still the most precise way to move teeth. A bracket bonded to each tooth and a wire running through them let the orthodontist control rotation, tipping and bite changes that aligners struggle with.
Metal braces are the most durable and usually the least expensive. Ceramic braces work the same way with tooth-colored brackets that are harder to see. Both suit teens and adults with crowding, deep bites, crossbites or teeth that need to move a long way. More on traditional braces.
Clear aligners: Invisalign and SureSmile
Clear aligners are removable trays that move teeth a little at a time. They suit most mild to moderate crowding and spacing in adults and teens who will wear them 20 to 22 hours a day.
Amores Dental was an Invisalign Platinum Provider for 2023-2025, and we also offer SureSmile aligners. See Invisalign in Miami and Invisalign Teen.
When should a child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7. Most children won't need treatment that young, but an early look can catch a crossbite, crowding or a jaw growth problem while it is easier to guide. Most kids who do need braces start between 9 and 14.
Orthodontics for adults
There is no upper age limit for moving teeth, as long as the gums and bone around them are healthy. Common reasons adults start treatment:
- Teeth shifted after braces as a teenager
- Crowding that makes brushing and flossing hard
- A bite that wears teeth down or strains the jaw
- Wanting a straighter smile before veneers, crowns or implants
What braces and Invisalign cost
Cost depends on the type of treatment and how long it takes. At Amores Dental, Invisalign typically runs $3,000 to $8,000. Invisalign Teen typically runs $4,000 to $7,500, and braces usually fall in a similar range.
Dental plans with orthodontic benefits often cover part of the cost, and we offer monthly payment options. You get a written estimate at the free consultation, before treatment starts.
