What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are caps placed over damaged teeth for the purpose of protecting them from further damage, and to restore normal appearance and functionality to a tooth. Crowns are often used to protect teeth from extensive damage due to cavities, and the crowns will get cemented into place over the damaged tooth by using dental cement.
Why Would I Need A Dental Crown?
Crowns are necessary in situations where there isn’t enough left of an original tooth to install a filling. Teeth which have become broken or fractured can be repaired by installing a crown, and teeth which have become badly decayed can be protected by a crown. Sometimes crowns are installed as cosmetic enhancements to make teeth look better and to achieve a better smile. Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your smile. Types of crowns include the full porcelain crown (ideal for use on the front teeth), the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and the all-metal crown (ideal for use on the back teeth).
List Of Reasons For A Dental Crown Procedure
- Reinforce a tooth that is cracked or broken
- Repair a tooth that has an old large filling
- Cover a tooth that is severely decayed
- Reinforce a tooth that has had a root canal
- Encase a dental implant
- Anchor a dental bridge
How Is My Tooth Prepared For A Dental Crown?
Prior to starting the procedure, your dentist will anesthetize the affected area, including the tooth and the gum tissue, so you don’t feel any pain or discomfort. Then, the tooth that is to receive the crown will be re-shaped by your dentist on the surface and along the sides, so the crown can then be emplaced over the tooth. The amount of tooth which gets removed will depend on the specific type of crown that will be used in the procedure. If there is any decay present, this will be removed by the dentist so it cannot have a chance to progress. The exterior surface of the tooth will be measured to ensure that the crown will fit comfortably and securely over the remaining tooth.
How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost?
A standard dental crown will usually cost somewhere between $1,100 and $1,500, although this is just a ballpark figure. The final cost will be influenced heavily by the type of crown that is to be installed, and also by the amount of work that is necessary prior to installation of the crown. Some dental insurance plans cover at least part of the cost, so your out-of-pocket costs should be significantly less than the stated cost. In addition, many dentists offer payment plans so you won’t have to come up with the full amount immediately.
