What are Same-Day Dental Implants?

April 10, 2023

One of the most popular options for replacing missing teeth is dental implants. Typically, the process takes a minimum of several months, especially if you need other procedures such as extractions or bone grafting. However, in some cases, it is possible to place dental implants on the same day as these procedures.

In this article, we'll explain what you need to know about same-day dental implants at Amores Dental near Miami, FL.

How do same-day dental implants work?

The procedure for same-day dental implants is similar to the procedure for traditional implants, whether you choose immediate load implants, mini dental implants, or All-on-4 dental implants. Here's what the process looks like:

  • Consultation - One of our highly skilled dentists will perform a comprehensive exam, including imaging, to determine if you are a candidate for same-day dental implants.
  • Surgery - We will administer local anesthesia to numb the area prior to getting started. If needed, we can provide you with sedation options. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, we will begin the procedure. If any extractions are required, those will be completed first. Then, any bone grafting or sinus lifting will be done. Finally, the implants will be placed.
  • Fitting artificial teeth - Once the implants and abutments are placed, the artificial teeth will be attached. If the implant is unstable, we may recommend leaving the caps off to avoid damaging the jawbone. In most cases, a temporary crown or overdenture will be placed. In a few months, this can be replaced with your permanent, custom crown or overdenture.
  • Aftercare/Recovery - Typically, same-day dental implant patients are able to go on with their lives with only a few minimal changes. Some of the most important changes are diet and oral hygiene habits. It's important to brush twice daily and floss at least once. You'll want to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid damaging the implants. Also, you'll want to stick to soft foods until the implants heal. If you bite down on something that is too hard, you risk damaging the implants and the jawbone.
  • Check-up - In about 6 months, you'll return for a follow-up. This will allow us to check that the implant has healed properly and that your new teeth fit together properly.

How much do same-day dental implants cost?

There are three types of same-day dental implants to choose from:

  • Immediate load: $4000 to $5000 per tooth
  • Mini dental implants: $500 to $1500 per tooth
  • All-on-4 dental implants: $12,000 to $25,000 per arch

What are the benefits of same-day dental implants?

There are several benefits of same-day dental implants, including:

  • Improved appearance: you leave the clinic on the same day with your new teeth
  • Reduced treatment time: implants and artificial teeth are placed on the same day, which significantly reduces treatment time
  • Reduced recovery time: since you don't have to heal between steps, your recovery time is much shorter
  • Improved oral health: exposed gums due to missing teeth are vulnerable to gum disease. By replacing missing teeth with dental implants, you protect your gums and also prevent jawbone deterioration.

Can dental implants be placed on the same day as tooth extraction?

Yes, in many cases, dental implants can be placed on the same day as tooth extraction, as long as you fit the eligibility criteria. This includes having a healthy jawbone and good oral and overall health.

Can dental implants be placed on the same day as bone grafting?

Typically, bone grafts must heal before dental implants can be placed. However, it is possible in some cases for these procedures to be done at the same time. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.

The team at Amores Dental is happy to address your questions or concerns at any time during your treatment. Below are some of the most common questions we've gotten from our patients.

Who is eligible for same-day dental implants?

In order to qualify for same-day dental implants, there are certain criteria that you must meet, including:

  • Be in good general health
  • Have intact, healthy jawbone
  • Be a non-smoker or willing to quit during the process

However, if any of the following apply, you are not eligible for same-day dental implants:

  • Untreated/active gum disease
  • Poor oral/overall health
  • Chronic disease
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Bruxism

Are same-day dental implants safe?

In general, surgery is a major undertaking and dental implants are no different. The risk of complications with dental implants is low. However, make sure that the dentist you choose has experience with dental implants. Make sure to ask about their credentials, as well as how many implants they have placed and what their success rate is. Also, make sure that you practice proper oral hygiene and avoid habits such as smoking and grinding your teeth, as these could lead to implant failure.

How successful are same-day dental implants?

Traditional dental implants have a 95% success rate for healthy patients. The success rate for same-day dental implants is slightly lower, at around 85%.

Are same-day dental implants better than traditional implants?

The biggest advantage of same-day dental implants over traditional implants is the shorter treatment time. The process for traditional implants may take up to a full year, whereas the process for same-day dental implants allows you to leave the office with your new teeth. However, it is important to note that the teeth placed on the same day as the implants are temporary and you will need to have them replaced with permanent ones when osseointegration is complete.
