What are Porcelain Veneers?

Amores Dental offers a treatment option known as a smile makeover. This treatment fixes any cosmetic issues with your smile. Porcelain veneers are one of the procedures that are used. Veneers are a porcelain shell that is attached to your teeth to change the length, color, size, shape, and functionality of your teeth. Since this is a cosmetic procedure, it is considered elective, which means insurance may not cover it.

If you want to find out more about porcelain veneers or you are interested in getting veneers to improve your smile, schedule your consultation with the team at Amores Dental today. We'll be happy to help you determine if this solution is right for you or if you may want to consider something else.

Who Should Get Veneers

If you have cosmetic dental issues with your teeth, dental veneers may be a good option for you. This includes:

  • Cracked/chipped teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Oddly shaped teeth
  • Gapped teeth

You must also have a healthy mouth and be willing to practice good oral hygiene habits.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The process of getting dental veneers typically takes about 2 weeks. As a general rule, the procedure for getting dental veneers will look like this:

We will start by performing a comprehensive exam and taking some x-rays and intraoral photos. This will help us determine if you are a good candidate for dental veneers. You will be able to review your "BEFORE" pictures, as well as simulated pictures of the expected outcome. This can help you decide if you want to move forward.

If we decide to move forward with treatment, we will begin by removing some of the enamel from your teeth. This will create room for the veneer to be placed. While this step generally isn't painful, we can provide you with local anesthesia to ensure that you don't feel anything.

We will create a mold of your teeth to be sent to the lab. Then, you will be able to look at the shade guide and work with the dentist to choose the color that most resembles your natural teeth. It is important to note that veneers cannot be whitened. Therefore, if you want whiter teeth, you'll want to have your natural teeth whitened first and then choose the shade for your veneers.

We will send the impressions and shade requirements to the lab so that your veneers can be fabricated to fit your teeth. You will be given a temporary veneer to wear so that your teeth are protected while you wait for your permanent ones to be fabricated.

When your permanent veneers come in, we will schedule an appointment to have them fitted and adjusted. Once we are sure everything looks good, we will use dental cement to secure them in place.

Benefits of Veneers

The primary benefit of veneers is the improvement in the aesthetics of your smile. This procedure is mostly used to fix the following dental issues:
  • Broken/chipped teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Pointed/unusually shaped teeth
  • Severe discoloration that can't be resolved with whitening treatments
  • Extremely small teeth

Depending on the type of veneer you choose, this tooth restoration option may last for 10 years or more. Therefore, they are a semi-permanent to permanent investment that can improve your confidence.

How to Care for Veneers

Veneers are an investment, so you will want to make sure that they last as long as possible. Therefore, there are certain things that you should do to care for your veneers:

Practice proper oral hygiene habits

Make sure that you are practicing proper oral hygiene habits, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing. This will keep your mouth healthy and help you protect your veneers. Only use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste, as well as an alcohol-free mouthwash.

Don't grind teeth

Many of our patients suffer from bruxism. This is a condition in which they clench or grind their teeth while sleeping. If not addressed, this could cause the veneers to become cracked. This can be solved by wearing a mouthguard while sleeping.

Use a mouthguard when playing sports

If you play sports, you should always use a mouthguard- even if you don't have dental restorations. This is because if you are hit in the face, it could cause your veneers or even your natural teeth to chip or crack.

Pay attention to what you're eating

Some foods are more likely than others to stain your veneers over time. These include berries, coffee, tea, wine, and soy sauce. Therefore, you'll want to either give them up or limit your consumption. If you do choose to consume them, make sure to clean your mouth out right away.

Avoid chewing on ice or eating hard candies, as this can cause the veneers to crack or chip.

Finally, avoid acidic foods and beverages, such as citrus or soda. If consumed excessively over a long period of time, it can cause the anti-staining resin to be worn down and permanently stain your veneers.

Stop smoking

If you are a smoker, you may want to give it up if you get veneers because the tar and other substances in cigarettes can cause the veneers to become discolored.

Never use teeth as tools

Your teeth should only be used for eating. You should never use them to open packages or loosen knots. You should also not bite on hard non-food items such as pens.

Porcelain Veneers FAQs

As dental professionals, we hear a lot of questions about the various treatments that we offer. We are always more than happy to answer questions and address concerns that our patients have. Below are some of the most common questions we hear about porcelain veneers.

How much do veneers cost?

There are several different types of veneers. Cost varies based on the type that you choose:
  • Porcelain: $925 to $2,500 per tooth
  • Composite Resin: $250 to $1,500 per tooth
  • Snap-on (temporary): as little as $299 per arch

How long do the veneers last?

You get what you pay for when it comes to dental veneers. Porcelain are the most expensive and should last 10 years or more- as long as you practice proper care and maintenance. Composite resin veneers are designed to last 5 to 7 years, based on how you take care of them. Snap-on veneers are designed to be temporary, so you should not expect them to have the durability and life expectancy of permanent veneers.

Are veneers permanent?

Yes, veneers are a permanent solution to your cosmetic dental issues. They are glued to your teeth with dental cement.

Do veneers damage your teeth?

In order to place veneers, we must file away some of the enamel to create room for them to be placed. Therefore, you will not want to have them removed once placed.
